Authority spokesman J.C. Davis said the rebate program started as a way to reduce the amount of water poured on private grass in Southern Nevada.
“The intent was not to take out areas of turf with a purpose,” he said. “But if the only time you walked on your lawn was when you were pushing a mower, it was not the best use.”
In 2007, the water authority is offering $2 per square foot for as much as 1,500 square feet of grass converted and $1 for each additional square foot. Synthetic turf costs from $5 to $10 per square foot, not including installation.
More than 86 million square feet of turf has been converted since 1999. Each square foot of grass converted saves 55 gallons of water annually.
While a rigorous weekly watering schedule is not necessary for synthetic grass, Liz Mullally, sales manager for SYNLawn of Las Vegas, said owners will need to hose their lawns periodically.
Mullally said synthetic lawns are made from materials like nylon and polyethylene that will hold heat in direct sunlight.
Hosing is the quickest way to cool the fibers, she said.
Blackburn said pet owners will need to clean a synthetic lawn ore often to remove waste residue, but other than a little water once a month, he said periodic brushing to stand up matted fibers is about all he recommends for keeping a natural look.
It has been about a year since Trubac converted his lawn and aside from a quick sprinkle to make his lawn cool to the touch, he said he has never needed to clean his lawn with water, even with a small dog using the lawn.
Blackburn said a synthetic lawn should last about 20 years and most come with a manufacturer’s warranty against fading.
Davis said people considering converting their lawn should contact the water authority first to make sure they meet the rebate requirements.
